Why is your Pool Green?

A green pool is caused by lack of care and using chemicals.  If you have a green pool it's because it's simply not been looked after correctly.  If you have a pool service and the pool is looking cloudy or slightly green, it will not be long before it is out of control, unless your pool service acts quickly to balance the water and clear up the problem.

If your pool gets this green, then no amount of chemical are going to put it right.  The only way is to drain the pool and start again.  Once the pool has been drained, you will probably also findt that there are stains that cannot be removed without using an acid wash.  An acid wash is usually carried out under these circumstances to ensure the final result is a clean, fresh pool.

Pool water can be either of these states, equilibirium, which would mean everything is great in your pool, scaling, agressive or corrosive.  Corrisive or agressive water can etch pool surfaces, corrode your pools equipment causing premature wear on filter and pump systems.  Scaling water causes mineral deposits to be left on tiles, surfaces and inside the plumbing and pool equipment. What is needed to make sure your pool has few proplems is balanced water that has reaced equilibrium.  Having balanced water means that the water has the correct level of mineral saturations so it doesen't pull them from your pool walls, which can add years to your pool finish.  Balanced water will also not drop minerals out of solution where it forms calcium scales on your tiles and surfaces.  The Ph in balanced water is steady to prevent corrosiveness and prolong your pool equipment.

We make sure that your water balance is perfect each time we visit your property, we check for not only pH, but alkalinity and calcium hardness, we then take all these measurements and make sure your pool is receiving the correct amount of chemicals to ensure a perfect pool status.

Circulation of water is also a factor, even water that is correctly balanced can still turn cloudy or form algea if there is insufficient circulation.  If your pool pump is running 6 - 8 hours a day and your filter is clean, then you should have no problems equipment wise.

High phosphates in your water could cause problems, phosphate is food for algea, the more there is the more food algea has to grow.  Make sure your pool service measures phosphates and acts to get rid of it. There are many pool services out there that rely on using chlorine only to shock pools to remove the algea.  Shocking a pool will remove the algea but it will NOT remove the phospahtes.  In fact, if you shock pool water the killed algea will release more phosphates back into the water, causing more algea blooms. After shocking a phosphate killer should be used to prevent future problems.

If cholorine levels are correctly maintained and your pool water still turns green, it will be the stabilizer that is causing the problems.  Stabilizer or cyunauric acid, is added to swimming pools to stop the UV rays from burning off chlorine added to the water.  The Stabilizer binds with cholorine and protects it from the suns rays.  Too much stabilizer can have a negative effect, and will make the chlorine usless.  Once this happens, you will find that your pool will need more chlorine than usual to keep the algea away.  It will be an ongoing cycle, with more and more chlorine needed to effectively get rid of the algea.
